There are three main principles of Hapkido:

  • Yoo (water, flowing): The fighter must learn to adapt to the movements of their opponent, like water flowing down a mountain, adapting to whatever surroundings it finds itself in. This also requires patience and conformity as to not directly clash with the opponent. By not directly clashing, the fighter seeks to engulf its opponent, like water permeates every pore of a rock as it goes around it. Water is shapeless but strong, as through all its forms it remains essentially the same. Soft and yielding is the philosophy of life that is embedded in this style of fighting. A fighter shoudl also be able to concentrate all strength on one point, like water shooting through a narrow nozzle.
  • Won (circle): A circle is a person's personal space and energy zone. Instead of encountering an opponents attack with direct force, if it is redirected and deflected in a circular motion the force is dissipated.
  • Hwa (nonresistance): Harmony relates to nature and the link between the mind and the muscles. One seeks first harmony with oneself and then harmony with the opponent.
